Accepting Street Contracts.
A special meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening, to consider tenders for streets formation, and to arrange for raising the loan now authorised. This was the first meeting since the . election of new Councillors, and there were present the Mayor (in the chair), Crs Taplin, Adams, Milroy, Mahony, Dixon, Haywood, M’Carthy, and Gibson. NEW OOUNOIIiLORS. The three newly elected Councillors were sworn in. The Clerk read the declaration of the poll made by him as returning officer. Cr Milroy thought there should be a documentary record of the polling at elections. The Mayor said the returning officer’s declaration as. just read was usually sufficient, but he would ask the Clerk to provide a record. TENDERS. The Council went into committee, and opened tenders. BEDFORD STREET. P. M’Laughlin ... £1139 0 0 D. Scally ... ... 1858 8 4 W. Gallagher ... 1690 7 6 G. H. Dickson ... 1986 11 0 Mace and Bassett... 2237 0 0 Moved by Cr Mahony, seconded by Cr Gibson, and agreed that M’Langhhn’s tender be accepted. The work comprises the formation of tho roadway and footpaths, chains wide from bridge to Taplin’s corner, the upper end to be re-graded. The gravelling is not included in this contract. The footways are to be gravelled, and also kerbed from Taplin’s corner to Odgere’ hotel, with kerbing on south side from Mr Mullen’s hotel to the bridge. This contract is to be completed in four months, and operations will be commenced next Monday.
BGMONT-BT. SOUTH AND DEVON-BT. This work comprises the levelling and claying of main street south of Taplin’s corner to cricket-field, with footpaths gravelled and kerbed. Also filling part of the hollow behind Mace & Bassett’s workshop to utilise the sand from the other work near cricket-field. This is a temporary filling, to be widened and completed into a street when the present contract is finished. Seven tenders were received as follow : P. McLaughlin ... £459 0 0 D. Scally 505 6 0 W. Gallagher ... 590 14 6 Denovan & Kerrick... 530 0 0 G. H. Dickson ... 697 0 0 J. J. Paterson ... 742 0 0 M. Flannery 765 0 0 Moved by Or Taplin, seconded by Or McCarthy, and agreed that the tender of McLaughlin be accepted. This contract is to be finished in three months. HADFIELD AND GLOUCESTER STREETS. Hadfield-street loads off Egraentstreet north, to houses in Storey’s paddock, and Gloucester-street leads to sections near Mr Finnerty’s. The streets are to be formed and gravelled; the work to be finished in two months. Five tenders were received, and that of Mr Flannery, £93 for both streets, was accepted. Ho has since found an error as to the price to be paid for gravelling, and has therefore not taken up the contract so far. I The above resolutions in committee were confirmed on report. Tenders for other streets will bo called ■hortly. RAISING THE LOAN. The Council also considered in committee the means of raising the loan. After some discussion, the subject was adjourned, no decision being come to. The Council adjourned.
