Wakatu Escaped Again.
Another mishap jeopardised the steamer Wakatu yesterday, but fortunately she has again slipt out of danger. She was entering the river about 1 o’clock in the afternoon, drawing (it is said) 7 feet of water, and the. tides being low at present she touched in crossing the bar. This caused her to lose steerway, and the entrance being narrow at present, - with an awkward turn round the breakwater, her nose ran on the north spit before she could swerve round the wall into the narrow channel. It is said she was tilted on o the spit by the wash then coming in from the south. After the tide fell, about half her cargo was taken out and punted to the wharf > and a rope being fastened to the opposite wall, she was expected to get off by the next tide, but failed. She did, however ) get afloat at high tide this afternoon. It was rumored that she had been damaged, but we believe she is sound and no worse. We understand the Patea S.S. Company intend giving a bonus to Captain Bonner, the mate, and crew, for their extra exertions in getting the Wakatu out of difficult positions on two occasions.
