HARBOR BOARD REPRESENTATIVES.
In view of the coming elections for the Harbor Board, I wish to suggest, through your valuable columns, the position with regard to the return of members, so far as districts are concerned. It appears to me that our position is this : At the last election the Hawera County was not in existence ; being then part of the Patea County, which County was then composed of three ridings, viz., Hawera, Otoia, and Waverley, each of which returned one member to the Board. Now how is our position affected by this change of circumstances ? Will the 3 ridings now comprising the Patea County contributeone member each, and the Hawera County be exempted, or will the Hawera County, which appears to be (notwithstanding its separation as regards County government) entitled to representation, be expected to return a member by the same rule as previously, which appears to be the only fair means ? I have thought it only right and conducive to the welfare of the district, that these matters should be ventilated and thoroughly understood, more especially as the public are far from satisfied with the present representatives on the Board ; and it will be wise for the ratepayers to bestir themselves, and choose men to study the interests of the district as a whole, without party prejudice, or narrowminded opposition, and who will endeavor by every means at their command to further the progress of the port ; consethe welfare of the district general ly. Perhaps the Chairman of the Harbor Board may be able to give some information on the above subject. Apologising for trespassing so much on your space, I am, &c. Progress.
