(PER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Rich Gold Yield. Thames, 13th,—In the Queen of Beauty mine 130 loads from 600 feet below the surface yielded 9940zs of gold. 1 Licensing Committees and Publicans. Auckland, 13th.—It is estimated that £20,000 has been spent during the past few months by Auckland publicans to meet the requirements of the Licensing Committee. OPENING THE KING COUNTRY. Auckland.—The natives at Whatiwhalihoe are wailing Mr Bryce’s arrival. They anticipate the opening of the country, but have not an idea how it is to be done. RIFLE ASSOCIATION PROGRAMME. Wellington. The Programme of the New Zealand Rifle Association has been issued. The first three matches are open to all comers ; the remaining four are confined to Volunteers only. The former count for either rifle or carbine belt ; of the latter two count for the championship, and two for rifle. The first match is 300 and 500 yards, 49 prizes, £ll9, and the Nelson Citizens’ Cup. The second and third matches are 200 yards each, 36 prizes each, of £IOO each. Fourth match rifle belt, 200, 500, 600 yds, 37 prizes, £l2O. The fourth match for carbine belt is 200, 300, and 500 yards, 36 prizes, £IOO. Fifth for rifle belt, 300 and 400 yards, 36 prizes, £llO 10s. The twenty highest aggregate scorers for rifles and same for carbines then fire a second stage match at 600 and 500 yards respectively. Ties for places in the twenties fire shot for shot. The highest aggregate scorers in all matches being champions, ties for championship to be decided by shot for shot, there being five grand aggregate prizes in each case, varying from £SO to £5. Civilian match at 200 and 500 yards, rifle and carbine trophy, matches same as previous year. Carbine and rifle team matches same as last year, but prizes increased to £4O, £2O, £lO, and £5 in each case. The Otago Rifle Association ladies’ ■ challenge sheild will also be fired for, but is restricted to certain Otago corps. Firing will commence on
Friday, 3rd November, and will be completed by Wednesdajq the Bth. The Government have authorised the issue of free railway passes to Volunteers, members of the Association, under certain conditions. Entries to bo made on or before Saturday, the 18th October. WOOL AND PRODUCE SALESThe New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Company report, under date London September 12th The wool sales progess firmly. Up to date 159,000 bales have been sold. The competition by Home and foreign buyers is active. Wheat market depressed ; Adelaide wheat is worth 495, and New Zealand 46s per 4961b5. Tallow market firm ; best mutton 465, and best beef 45s 6cl per cwt. Leather market quiet ; best sides, 9|-d per lb. New Zealand flax market quiet ; fine quality worth £29 per ton. Medal to the Queen. Wellington. —A gold medal which Messrs Joubert and Twopenny bad struck for presentation to the Queen, to celebrate the opening of Christchurch Exhibition, was sent Homo by the Governor, and has been presented to Her Majesty by Ear! Kimberley, from whom a despatch conveys thanks from the Queen to the promoters of the Exhibition. FireChristchurch. —Three cottages in Sydenham were destroyad by fire last night, one two-storey. O’Donnel, in whose house the fire broke out, is a laborer, with nine children, and loses everything but a sewing machine.
