This curious statement is made, that it is easier for farmers to send mutton from this colony to England, than it was for Scotch farmers to send mutton to London a hundred years ago. Then the price was a penny a pound in Scotland and tenpence in London ; yet the bad roads, the distance, and the risks were enough to maintain a famine price for meat in London.
