Hawera Cricket Club.
(FROM OU U CORKESPONDEST.) The annual meeting was held on (Saturday last, the President, Mr I. Bayly, in the chair. The Secretary stated that there was £2O 3s Id to the credit of the Club, and Mr H. K. Farrington, Secretary to the sports Coinmitte, said there was'a balance of about £22 to be handed to the Club, making a balance in hand to start the season of about £43. The report was ''oceivcd with acclamation, and I think the Club are to bo congratulated on the state of their finance. A discussion arose as to whether it was advisable to hold another sports meeting. Some in the room were rather against it, as the greater portion of prizes given away ast year were given by private donations and they could not expect to get so much again. Mr York thought it ought to be tried again. Mr Farrington also wanted to see it again, and proposed that provided sufficient support (say to extent of £2O) could be obtained, the sports be held on 9th November. Seconded by Mr Fork, and carried. The following gentlemen were elected a committee to canvass, and carry out the sports : Messrs Riddiford, Nolan, Farrington, Lukis, G. Bayly, White, Wanklyn, Mason, Southby, Bate, S . Bayly, Moore, Johnston, with power to add to their number. Mr King proposed that a vote of thanks to the late committee be given, especially Messrs Nolan and Farrington who did so much towards making the sports a success. The following officers were elected for the year. Mr I. Bayly, President ; Mr T. Mason, Vice-President ; Mr Riddiford, Captain ; Mr White, Secretary and Treasurer. Committee : Messrs Ranson, G. Bayly, Farrington, Bate, and Jones. Ground Committee : Messrs Mason, Riddiford, and White. A telegram was received from the Auckland Club, asking how much we could guarantee if a team played a two days’ match.
Mr Riddiford proposed that £3O be offered to the Auckland team. Seconded by Mr Wanklyn and carried.
Resolved, that the Auckland match be played by the chib. Mr Ranson proposed a resolution for making the averages, up as be Considered he was entitled to the bat for the second eleven, but was put into the first eleven at the end of the season.
Mr Wanklyn seconded. A warm discussion ensued, but Mr Hanson’s resolution was ultimately carried. Mr Mason was elected captain of the second eleven. Messrs Riddiford, G. Bayly, and White were elected a match committee. A discussion arose as to whether it would be advisable to fence off a racing course, several members thought that it would take up too much of the cricketing ground. Mr G. Bayly proposed that a course be made not to cost over £25. Mr Ranson seconded. No resolution was carried, several members objecting. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the proceedings.
