BURNING A CHURCH.
WHO DID IT? A dangerous form of- irreligious mania has broken out at New Plymouth. The Presbyterian body have been like a house divided against itself; one section of the congregation abusing and despising the other, because they could not agree about iho merits or shortcomings of their minister.
A telegram from New Plymouth on Saturday says:—St, Andrew’s Church, belonging to the Presbyterian body, and respecting the possession of which a dispute has lately arisen between the late pastor and his congregation, was burnt down this morning shortly after one o’clock. The building was insured in the Victoria Company for £4OO in the name of the Rev. Mr Breach, but the trustees of the church have lodged a protest against the money being paid to the insurer, as he has no .legal interest in the building. It appears that the dispute had in no way been settled, and the committee had put fresh locks on the church, as the Rev. Mr Breach had been heard to state that he would preach in the building on Sunday, and a clergyman from Auckland had arrived to take his place in the pulpit. It is expected that an enquiry will be made, as incendiarism is suspected.
