MANUFACTURING INDUSTRIES.

From a statement compiled by the Registrar-General and presented to both Houses of Parliament, it appears that in the month of April, 1881, the number of manufactories, works, &c., in the colony wa? 1643, employing 16,599 male and 1339 female persons. In 1878 the returns showed 1271 manufactories or works, 13,728 male and 449 female workers. The approximate value of land and buildings in April last was L 1,993,330, and of machinery and plant, L 1,612, 141. These figures are exclusive of the value of flax mills and qnartzcrushing machinery. The comparative figures for 1878 are L 1,761,694 — L 1,289,378.
