Fhiiuy, before Mr C. A. Wray, R.M. Mrs Catherine Whelan was charged with allowing the chimney of her house to take fire on the 13th. The defendant stated she had only gone in the house the day previous, and did not know the chimney was foul. The case was dismissed with a caution, STEALING FROM A DWELLING. Sophia Wilson was charged with stealing, on or about the 12th instant, one window blind and curtain, two plates, two kits, one hat, and 6 bottles catchup, the property of Mr George Beamish, Mr Beamish identified the articles produced, which he valued at 15s 6d, and said he had left them in the house he pro\iously occupied, the door being left closed but not locked. Sergeant Donovan said he searched the prisoner’s house and found the articles produced, but prisoner admitted taking only some of them. She stated in Court she was sorry for taking the articles. Sergeant Donovan said a good deal of petty thieving is going on, and although this was the prisoner’s first offence, she docs not bear a good character. Sentenced to seven days’ imprisonment in Patea gaol. DEBT CASE. Barraclongh and Aldridge v, A. Bibbs was a claim for £2O 3s, goods supplied. No appearance of defendant. Judgment fer plaintiffi, and costs 7s,
