HAWERA.

(from oub correspondent. FOOTBALL AND CRICKET. The football match Hawera v. Patea, played here on Saturday, was well worth some exposure to the cold to witness. On first looking at the teams, the Haweras appeared far the heaviest ; bnt looks are deceptive, for the Pateans had the best of it in the scrimmages. Gibbons played splendidly for his side, and the brothers Bayley were very useful, (altogether, I have never seen the Captain play better) for the home team. It would be almost unfair to mention other names, as every man appeared to strive hard for his side. Nothing of consequence occurred in the first spells, but in the third G. Bayley got hold of the ball about 25 yards from the Patea.goal, and dropped it over the rope. That being the only score made in the game, the Haweras were proclaimed victors. The Patea forwards worked far better than the' Haweras ; and had their backs been good, I feel confident the result would have been different.

The Cricket Club will hold their annual

meeting on Saturday, when several matters of importance will be brought up. An Auckland team has telegraphed to know if wo can meet them for a two-days match. We shall no doubt go into practise as so on as the weather permits, as there is not only the above match in view, but we have to regain laurels lost to the Patea men.
