THE MARINE DEPARTMENT
The annual report of the Marine Department states that sixty-six wrecks have been reported during the year, of which 59 were on the coast, and the rest beyond the Colony. Nineteen out of this number were total losses, and the whole of the wrecks caused the deaths of 160 people, of whom 130 perished at the wreck of the ill-fated Tararua. Passenger certificates have been issued to 146 steamers of an aggregate capacity of 14,650 tons, an increase of 8 over last year. As the Government had determined to check the slaughter of seals that was being carried on at the Auckland Isles and elsewhere during the close season, a vessel has been obtained for the purpose of keeping watch over the localities where illegal captures were being made. This is the Kohimarama, lately used at the Naval Training School near Auckland. She has been rechlistened Kekeno, or Seal, and will cruise about the Campbell and Auckland Isles. Her commander has been instructed to inspect the depots of provisions provided at various places for the succour of castaways.
