Mr Bryce’s Native Policy.

FORMIDABLE OPPOSITION. (per press association.)

Wellington.—-In the Assembly yesterday, Mr Toraoana moved the committal of the Native Committees Empowering Bill. .

Mr Bryce strongly opposed the bill as being directly opposed to the policy he had throughout been endeavoring to establish in native affairs.

Tawhai, Daniels, Taiaroa, and Sheehan supported the Bill, and after considerable discussion,. the motion for going into committee was put to the vote, and lost by 30 to 28. Mr Bryce then moved that the bill be committed that day six months, and the division showed that 29 voted on each aide.

The Speaker gave his vote against Mr Bryce’s proposals, so as to leave the question of future committal of the bill an open one.
