TO THE “ MAIL.” (per united press association. ) - Stack Burning. Timaru, July 31.—Denis HefEernan, a farmer, was to-day arrested for counselling and abetting the burning of three stacks of grain belonging to himself last week. They were insured in the Royal office. Gas Rivalry. Christchurch, July 31.—The Star states that a Christchurch resident several years ago in England constructed a machine similar to that made by Mr Binnie, of Dunedin, for the production of gas from; animal fat. He still has the apparatus, and as it is in working Mr Perk proposes. to have a competition with Mr Binnie, if it can be arranged. Starved to Death. Invercargill, July 31. —A man named McWatt was found dead. There were no marks upon his person to indicate foul play or accident. The house was, however, entirely destitute of property and : food, with the exception of a portion of a turnip, which had evidently been bitten' by some one, presumably by the deceased. The dead man is a mere skeleton, and the constable who found him is of opinion; that he died of starvation. Suicide. Auckland* July 31. Lieu. Drake, of H. M. S. Nelson, at Russell, while in the bush, found the body of a man with his throat cut,- with a knife still in his hand. The body was identified as that of Daniel, Munn, brother of David Munn, jockey. Gas Explosion through Rats. Auckland, July 31.—An explosion of gas took place at Goodson’s Arcade through rats gnawing a gaspipe through.. The damage is not serious. Valuable Wool Shed Burnt. Napier, July 31.—A woolshed on toe Chesterhupe station has been destroyed by fire. The building was observed to be all right on Saturday night, and on Sunday morning was discovered a heap of ruins. The fire is feared to be the work of an incendiary.
