TO THE “ MAIL.” (per united press association.) Larrikin Mischief. Christchurch.—A number of larrikins, on Friday last at Kaiapoi, sunk the dredge belonging to the Harbor Board, Fire and Supposed Fraud. Dunedin.—A strange case of fire has led to the arrest of Mr M‘Gill, draper in the Arcade, on a charge of setting fire to bis. premises to defraud the insurers. Early on Sunday morning a fire was noticed in his cellar, though he seemed not aware of it; and by prompt action the fire was soon got out. Some oiled wrappings and rags were found hanging about bis premises, and he was apprehended. His stock was insured for £2OOO in the N.Z. and National offices. He says the stock was worth fully that. Suspicious Fire. Nelson.—The Bay View Hotel, Wakana road, was destroyed by fire last night. It was occupied by Mr Fogden. The origin is a mystery. The license was allowed to lapse at last meeting of the Licensing- Court. The building insured for £3OO, and the furniture for £2OO. -:,■ FLOOD DAMAGES in the SOUTH. TRAINS STOPPED. Damage by rains in the neighborhood of Dunedin is slight. On the fiat several bouses were under water, and one is severely damaged by a landslip. Serious landslips-at Chain Hill Tunnel detained the southern, trains four hours at Piretohi., On the northern line a serious landslip occurred, but it is expected to be clear to-day, between Clarksville and Milton. A good deal of damage is done : oil the Lawrence branch; also between Waitahuna and Lawrence. At Johnston passengers had to leave the train and proceed on foot to Waitahuna. Port- Chalmers- train did - not reach town until yesterday morning. : The Taieri river overflowed its banks, and the plain is an immense lake. SHOCKING ACCIDENT. SMASHED BY MACHINERY. The Union Company have received a cablegram; stating that David Rinton), 2nd engineer on the Waldtipu,''was killed by falling in among the engines the day after leaving Wellington. He was literally smashed to pieces. He leaves a widow in Dunedin, and his life was insured for £2OO.
