At the R.M. Court on Thursday Thos. Ecc-lesfield.-vyas fined 10s and. costs for allowing; cdttle to stray in the Borough ;
BOROUGH COUNCIL AFFAIRS. On Wednesday evening the ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held. ;Mr M’Guire took the oath as Mayor again.
Mr Foy, the Engineer, was allowed one month’s leave of absence. The Provincial District Auditor wrote asking for vouchers) &c., to be forwarded to Wellington for audit. The Council declined to allow any records to go out of the office. •
Councillors Bate and King had a breeze while on the subject of nuisances. Councillor Bate said the bye-laws ought to be strictly enforced. Councillor King said that .the officers of the Council ought to be allowed to use their own discretion, ■He?knew of : a' certain (person in the town who kept a coal-yard, and this person was openly defying ..the by allowing carts to go over the footpath and making himself liable to a heavy penalty. ; Councillor Bate said of course he knew Councillor King : was alluding to him, and he' thought it was very bad taste on Councillor King’s part to try, to put a stop to enterprise ;-rimt it wasjUSt like him. .
King-then twitted; Gquhcillqr Bate on his nominating Councillor M’Guire for Mayor after opposing him in the Council.
Councillor Bate;-retorted. tliatylve Aidrit to keep Councillor King put of the chairIn fact if Mr M’Guire had not allowed himself to be nominated, he was prepared to contest; the; election with Council!oiKing, and would do so if he had a chance.
i The Council then went into committee ; and on resuming,
Councillor King moved that tlie M.ayor find out'the besVtpedns of disposing of the £6,000 loan until it was required. Carried. The Council adjourned.
