Wednesday Evening, July 26, 1882.

Delivered on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Evenings by mounted mes- • • sengers —at Hawera by 7-30 o’clock,* at Normanby by 8-15, at Manaia and Wairaate Plains by 8-30, and Southward at Waverley (for train) by 6 o’clock.

The Harmonic Concert this evening should- attract a large audience, if the weather be not too rough. Mr Huff’s photographic premises, opposite the Post Office, will be open next Saturday. Mr Jackson’s stock sale at Waverley takes place on Friday, the entries being very large. Nolan & Coy.’s stock sale at Manaia takes place to-morrow. The Rev. Mr Wilks has just gone to Manaia to take chargh of the large new school, one of the finest on the coast, His difficulty with the School Committee at Heathcote has been enquired into, the result being favorable to him. He can now begin with a clean slate in a new district, and his late experiences will perhaps enable him to avoid troubles in future. One or two contankerons members on a committee may easily embroil a teacher in needless trouble. Earthquakes are troubling ns again. A sharp shake was felt in this district aud at Wanganui about 12.30 on Monday midnight, and a second slight shake about forty minutes later. It is said a‘slight shock was felt at noon yesterday in Wanganui;, It was not noticed here. Also that a shock was felt there this morning. North v, Williams.— While the contest between these parties is being vigorously carried on here, other proceedings affecting it are occasionally taken in Auckland and Napier and New Plymouth. Last week Mr Hesketh applied in Auckland to Mr Justice Gillies for an extension for the third time of the caveat lodged by Mr North against all d ea bngs' with . tbe property alleged to have been fraudulently transferred by the debtor to his sons, and a further extension for one month was granted. We understand that the bank of New South Wales and the bank of Australasia have presented securities for registration, which however is not practicable until the caveat has been removed. , Tbe inward ’Frisco mail arrived today in-this district. A day has been lost at New Plymouth through sheer negligence. The steamer arrived in the -. rrft — u-ou —anm yesrurcray morning, and the mail bags were actually not at the railway station till shortly after the train had left at 7-5 a.m. The blame is laid on the local boating company for not tendering the steamer more promptly, ; Parliament is having a spell of talking against time. The motion for increasing wages of railway servants has been negatived, because it was interposed to prevent Government getting supply. The policy of the new loan is to be debated in a few days. North v. Williams.— This case is coming to a close. The seven disputed proofs of debt have been gone through, and the Judge is expected to give his decision late this afternoon on the first rule as to disallowing these proofs. If npset, they may upset all the resolutions carried at creditors’ meetings. The Education Board met at Wanganni yesterday. Business affecting this district was the following :—At Ngaire, Mr Everest has been appointed teacher, and a residence is to be built. Manntahi Committee are granted £lO towards erecting a fence and flooring a shed. Patea School was referred to by Mr Contts, who asked whether the ground on which the school and master’s house stood was under the full control of the school committee, or was it vested in the commissioners of secondary reserves ?—Sir W. Fox said he could not answer the question without reference to papers.
