AUCKLAND AND PUBLIC WORKS.
The Auckland Herald special correspondent at Wellington, telegraphing immediately after the delivery of the public works statement, said :— u The majority of members seemed satisfied with the statement, but southern members have been heard to complain of the exceptionally liberal manner in which Auckland has been treated, apparently forgetting that some of the money is only the unexpended balance of lasfcyear’s votes, as, for instance, the appropriation for the Tharaes-Te Aroha railway. On the other hand, Auckland members, especially those representing districts south of the city are heartily displeased with the distribution of the money, which gives the North only £200,000. Some regard the proposal to borrow £1,100,000 for the trunk line as a bait, and say that it may be three or four years before this is done, and in the meantime public works will be rapidly proceeded with in Wellington, Hawke’s Bay, and Taranaki districts, and perhaps the trunk line begun in the Wellington district, and taken through the centre of the Island, • The North of Auckland members, however, seem thoroughly satisfied.”
