A Local Relic.
11 Fragments of a Journal saved from Shipwreck " is a scarce book, recording the wreck of the ship Lord Worsley in To Namu bay, about a mile north of Opunaki, in August 1862, on a voyage from Nelson to New Plymouth. The writer of the book is a London solicitor who has just passed through this district with the object of revisiting the scene of the wreck from which he and others were so narrowly saved. He found still standing the old whare in which he and others saved from the wreck were confined while the Maoris debated whether to tomahawk them. Wirimi Kingi and Te Whiti (then a young man of little importance) used their influence to save the Europeans, and eventually conducted them to New Plymouth. The author of this “ Fragment of a Journalintends republishing the book, and Mr John Black is revising the names of persons and places, some of which were not accurately mentioned in the original edition. It is to be hoped the author who has come so far to revisit a scene of sadly tender interest to him will bear in mind that many old settlers along this coast and at New Plymouth would gladly possess copies of this “ Fragment,” when the new edition is printed. He would therefore be doing a public service (in a local sense) if he would place some copies on sale in this district. Perhaps Mr J. Black will convey this suggestion to him.
