As to direct steam service, the Chronicle says it is understood that the Agent-General, Sir F. D. Bell, in his despatch to the Government, furnishes a large amount of information derived from the principal Home authorities. The practical purport is, that if the colony wants a swift and luxurious mail service, it will have to pay heavily for it, and a very large subsidy will be required. If, on the other hand, it will be content with a moderately quick and comfortable service of say 50 days for passengers and cargo, as compared with the present average 100 days’ passage of sailing vessels, this could be obtained at no very formidable cost.
