CRITICAL STATE of the MINISTRY
The position of parties is getting critical, and the fate of Ministers depends on about two members, which is not a very happy state for a Government to be placed in. Re-construction is the only cure for the evil. If the Opposition carry a vote of want of confidence, their troubles would only begin, for, were it able to form a Government, it would fail if a vote of want of confidence was tabled by Major Atkinson, who is the only man who could at the present time command a following in the House. The question is—whether in the interest of the Colony, it is better to bring about this at once, and form a fairly strong Government this session, or blunder through this, and do it next session ?’ If not done this session, most of the business will have to be dropped, and the session closed as soon as possible. On the other hand, if the House determines to reconstruct, the sooner a vote of want of confidence is tabled the better, so that the right men may obtain office, and conduct the practical business of the country through the House as soon as possible.—Cor.
