TO THE “MAIL.” ♦ (per reuter’s agency.) THE WAR IN EGYPT. 2,000 EGYPTIANS KILLED. Alexandria, 14tb.—It has now been . fully proved that the Egyptians suffered heavy loss in killed and wounded during 'the bombardment of the forts. The total number killed is estimated at 2,000, hut no definite information on the point can be ascertained. The following despatches from Alexandria were issued as a “ Mail extra ” on Saturday ; ; BURNING OP ALEXANDRIA. TROOPS LANDED. Alexandria, 13th.—-The city is still burning in many parts. The conflagration is greatest in the Native and European quarters, and it is now rapidly extending in the direction of the port.: The admiral has landed a force of six hundred men to stay the .flames, if possible ; but this will be a work of enormous difficulty, EGYPTIAN ARMY RETREATING. It is reported that the Egyptian troops, have massed in force outside the city ; but at the same time others say they are demoralised, and are rapidly retreating into the interior. FORTS UNDERMINED. ORDERS PROM ENGLANDIt is suspected that the town forts have been undermined hy the Egyptians, in .anticipation of their occupation by the English. ■ . Admiral Seymour has received instruc tion from England not to. dismantle forts, but to invite the Khedive to restore order iu concert witli Dervish Pasha, the Turkish Special Commissioner. Admiral will also invite commanders of the fleets of other European Powers lying off the port to co-operate with him in restoring order. KHEDIVE’S LIFE THREATENED. Alexandria, 13th.—The Khedive has taken refuge in his palace at Ramleh, five miles from the city. A large body of .troops surround the palace, and are making threats on the Khedive’s life. His Majesty’s condition is deemed most critical and precarious,- and great fears are entertained for his safety. CITY IN FLAMES, PILLAGING AND BURNING. Alexandria, 14th, Morning. The city continues in a state of complete an-
arehy and lawlessness. It is now overrun by hundreds of plunderers, released convicts, and marauders, who are pillaging in every direction, and continuing the work of setting fire to houses. The city may be said to be completely devastated, and given up to rapine and fire. Attacking the Pillagers. A force of English Marines from the fleet landed to-day, and attacked the marauders. The latter scattered in all directions, and seven of them were shot dead by the fire of marines. The Arabs are now joining the plunderers in looting the city. ESCAPE OP THE KHEDIVE. FURY OF THE MOB. It lias been ascertained that the Khedive has escaped from Ranileh palace, and has succeeded in getting on board a vessel in the harbor. His Majesty is accompanied by Dervisch Pasha, whose life is also in peril osving to the fury of the mob. SHIP GROUNDED IN CANAL. ARABS PLUNDERING. Intelligence has been received that the new tea steamer Glenlyon from China is aground in Suez Canal, and latter is therefore blocked. It is stated that the Arabs have attacked and are looting the vessel, but this requires confirmation.
