MADAME PATTI’S SALARY.
Talent sometimes commands princely remuneration. Madame Adelina Patti is engaged by Mr Mapleson for a series of operatic performances in the United States, and the famous prima donna is to sing at least twice a week during six months, tor which she is to receive £Ol7 a night, equal to £1,834 a week. She is also to be provided with a Pullman travelling-car containing drawing and dining rooms, kitchen, and sleeping accommodation for all her servants, as well as two cooks to accompany the expedition. These are extras thrown in by Mr Mapleson by way of making her comfortable daring her six months tour. This extravagance seems imaginary, and the London Times ventured to hint as much; but Mr Mapleson promptly wrote confirming the high terms, and added that £9,170 bad already been lodged to her credit at a New York bank as a guarantee for payment of the last ten nights’ services in her tour. This remuneration is the highest on record. Jenny Lind, the once renowned Sweedish nightingale, once received £4,800 for an operatic season of four months in London, equal to £1,200 a month. But Madame Patti is to get four times that rate of pay.
