AFRAID TO GIVE.
I expected to see in the Mail a list of sums promised for the new church. Certain wealthy Churchmen ought to feql ashamed at' the shabby little sums which they promised at the meeting for the new church. Some parishioners who promised small amounts of £5 to £lO are known to be struggling to make a living ; while others who promised £lO or £2O are known to have accumulated considerable wealth in the place, and could as easily afford to give £IOO as their poorer neighbors could afford to give £5. In giving for religion, a. man is only a sham Christian unless he gives in proportion to his means, and gives liberally enough to feel that he has made a sacrifice. I expected to hear that several fifties had been promised. Not one ! The highest contribution was promised by one who must have intended to make a sacrifice. The same remark applies to several persons (including one lady) who promised sums of £5 to £lO. In these hard times, people cannot be expected to give so freely as when business is prosperous and money is plentiful. But if you give at all and can afford it, don’t do the thing shabbily, say I.
