Referring to the Union Oil, Soap, and Candle Company (Limited) the Auckland Merald says :—The capital is L 50,000, in Shares of LI each, but it is not expected that more than 10s per share will be called op. In the matter of the manufacture of atearine candles there is a wide field for enterpise, inasmuch as there competition except with the imported article. Nearly a million pounds weight of stearine candles are annually imported into the province, paying a duty of over L6OOO, so the new local industry starts with that handicap in its favor, and a continually increasing demand. As to oile and soaps the same remarks apply. As utilising local resources, and opening up fresh avenues of employment for the industrial classes, the new enterprise cannot fail to be otherwise than a great benefit to the community. i
