(per united press association.) Oil, Soap, and Candle Industry. Auckland, 26th.—30,000 shares in Union Oil, Soap, and Candle Company have been- promptly applied for. Seaman Drowned. Auckland, 26th.—A seaman was lost overboard from the cutter Stag when off the Kawan on Saturday night. Wrestling Match. Dunedin.—There was a foil house at the Princess Theatre on Saturday to witness the wrestling match between Professor Miller and Slade of Timaru. On first coming together a good deal of time was occupied in getting a hold, Miller having to make all the play. While* gripping his opponent by the shoulders, Miller- thr,ew him, without any tripping, by sheer strength. Slade was taken by surprise, but the fail was a very pretty one. The second time Miller feigned as though attempting to trip his antagonist, and Slade backheeled him very neatly. The third fall was secured by Miller, who threw Slade (who is a big, powerful man) clean over his head. The fourth bout occupied the least time of any: Miller cross-bnt-tocked his man, thus securing the necessary three falls. The stakes were £25 a side.
H.M.S. Nelson at Auckland. Auckland.—The Mayor and Town Clerk visited the Nelson on Saturday, Commodore received them courteously, and they were shown round the vessel. He stated that he would stay in port about a fortnight, and the vessel would be thrown open to the public. Torpedo practice was engaged in by the Nelson in; harbor.; A ball to the Cora-, modore and officers is arranged for Thursday week.
. Sale of Wreck. Wellington.—The wreck of the steamer Westport, as she lies off Plaxbourne, will be sold by auction on Tuesday next.
Governor’s Deputy Wellington.— The assumption of the Government of New Zealand by Sir James Prendergast, Chief Justice, is gazetted.
Dog Show. Christchurch. —The dog show at the exhibition was a great success, there being upwards of 250 entries. Don't do it AgainInvercargill. The Supreme Court baa been occupied with a charge of arson against P. H. Ford, bootmaker, whose shop in Dee-street was found some months ago to be on fire under suspicious srirronndings. The jury, after a lengthy deliberation, returned a verdict of “ not guilty, with a grave suspicion.” The prisoner was then discharged, the judge observing that, in Scottish law, the verdict would have been “ not proven.”
Missing. Ashburton.—A search party consisting. of 61 residents has been oat searching for a missing man named Anderson, but without success. It now thought his remains will never be found. Tramway Conditions. Auckland.—The tramway scheme is likely to hang fire owing to a committee of the council recommending, as conditions, the equal share of the councill in in all profits over 7 per cent, and the right of council to order renewal of plant, without compenstion, at the; end of the lease of 21 years.
■ = -Drowned at a Ford. Palmerston North.—A man named White was drowned in the Manawatu river near Palmerston, on Saturday evening. He was crossing a ford, and is supposed to have got in quicksand. The body is not recovered.
