THE GOVERNOR and MINISTERS.

. This is what the Lyttelton Times thinks ; The memos between the Governor and his Ministers show that sometimes the position of Governor and advisers can be in a most important particular on some occasions reversed. In the matter of the report which His Excellency bad to transmit to the Secretary for the Colonies, at the request of the Imperial Government, he was of course perfectly independent of the advice of his advisers. Ho consulted them in the most complete manner, and lie gave every opportunity of proving their views of the case, from which he dissented. Bathe firmly declined to modify his opinions one jot in accordpuce with their request. He even, and very properly, refused to argue the question with them. A more complete snub has never been more quietly administered. Ministers are very roughly bandied, but they have themselves to blame. They never reasoned on the Native question with Sir Arthur Gordon. All they have ever condescended to do has been to make up their own minds, and simply order the Governor to act. His Excellency has paid them off beautifully in their own coin, by declining to give them any reasons for his conclusions. These we believe will be accepted by history when those of his present advisers will have been forgotten.
