Hawera Borough Council.

(prom our correspondent.)

The Borough Council met on Wednesday evening, all the Councillors present. It was resolved that the Mayor call a public meeting for the purpose of forming a Fire Brigade ; and that the Institute be taken over by the Council. A report, with scheme for future working of the institution, was compiled by the clerk and read. Resolved that a Committee be appointed to enquire into the matter.

Accounts to the amount of over £3OO were passed for payment.

It was resolved that tenders be called for formation of most of the streets not yet formed. The Mayor gave notice that he will move at the next meeting that the Council meet every fortnight, as the work accumulated too much during the month.

Tenders for the Council Chambers were opened, and were as follow :—J. A. Johnston, Wanganui, £ll3O (accepted). (Declined) : Mace and Bassett, Patea, £1169 ; C. M. Sorenson, Hawera, £1177 7s ; A. O’Brien, New Plymouth, £1247 ; Duffil Bros., Hawera, £1294 ; Scott and Baker, Hawera, £1312 ; C. M. Crocker, Hawera, £1356. A, Towner, Hawera, £1275 (informal). The Council adjourned at 11.30,

HAWERA GOSSIP. There is a split in the Band. It appears that a bandmaster was appointed a few days ago, his credentials being considered the best out of three applicants. This did not suit some who wanted to have a friend of their own put in, and they refused to play under the new bandmaster ; they also declared their intention of sticking to the instruments, and forming another band. These misguided youths are perhaps not aware that the instruments belong to the town, and having been paid for by public subscription, the Borough Council have a say in the matter. That body called the- instruments in on Thursday evening, but very few of them having turned up, the delinquents are to be summoned (if they don’t return them in a few days) to show cause why they should not give them up. It seems a strange thing that there should be so much haggling over a thing like this. The persons who appointed the bandmaster appointed the best man, according to testimonials ; but some of remainder have a fifteenth-removed cousin whom they want to be under, and the resnlt is dislocation. Of course it will merely be for the Council to decide who are to have the instruments.

There must be an awful Jot of villany in this part of the district, if is is to be judged by the quantity of work the R.M. has to do. He has had to burn the midnight oil in the Court-house every sitting since he returned from his holiday.
