Judgment by default. ; , The Harbor Board have deferred till Saturday the consideration of the suggested scheme for raising £30,000 to £50,000 for harbor improvements, by applying for a land block up the Patea river in exchange for reserves taken by Government, and by making the river navigable as a highway to give the land a value for settlement. Nearly ten thousand pictures were sent in for selection at the Royal Academy exhibition this year. Only about two thousand could be accepted and hung in the limited space. The Committees of the Rifle Volunteers and of the Volunteer Band met last night to consider the question of appointing a bandmaster. It was resolved to rescind the motion made by the Rifle Committee last week appointing Mr Sparkes, it being the almost unanimous wish of the Band that Mr Thomas Hamerton should be appointed. After a long discussion* the joint committees agreed to appoint Mr T. Hamerton as bandmaster, at a salary of £3O per annum.

MajorAtkinson.will deliver the Financial Statement on Friday. His health has suffered lately, and being advised to avoid excitement or strain, the budget speech has had to be twice postponed. He now expects to be ableto go through this ordeal on Friday.

Parliamentary business has had little interest lately. The Public Works Statement is expected to be made next week, and the Financial Statement on Friday.

An architect in Christchurch drew a plan for the Chamber of Commerce, to cost £4,500. Tenders were invited, but the lowest was about £B,OOO, and the projected building has therefore been abandoned. Whether the fault lay with the architect of estimating too low, or with the builders in tendering at excessive prices, is a disputed point. W. Bishop’s Illustrated Guide to Wellington is a bulky handbook, well got up, full of interesting information relating to all townships and districts along this Coast, and . made attractive with numerous illlnstrations. Each township or district has a a descriptive notice, and the reference to Patea and district is rather flattering. The price of the guide is a shilling. “ Don’t you think that Miss Brown is g is a very sweet girl ? ” asked Henry. “ Oh, yes, very sweet,” replied Jane e “ that is to say, she is well preserved.”
