This Afternoon.
A Festive Afiair.
Wellington,—The citizens’ ball last night to Commodore Erskine and officers of E.M.S. Nelson and Miranda was a pronounced success. The Drill Shed was beautifully decorated. Estimated 650 present including His Excellency, Lady Gordon, Miss Gordon, Premier, and Chief Justice. SHEEHAN AND HIROKI.
Wellington.—Mr Sheehan states that the assertion of Hiroki in his confession as published, to the effect that he had warned Major Brown and Mr Sheehan not to put men upon Mhmahaki block, is absolutely untrue, and that he never saw Hiroki until after the murder, when Hiroki was a fugitive at Parihaka. Mr Sheehan had several meetings with Native owners of the Block, and the only point raised by Natives was a claim against the survey party for money for alleged improper *
conduct; also the question of area and position of reserves. Both questions were disposed of before the land was sold. HEAVY FLOODS.
Gisborne.—A continuous downpour of rain since Sunday last has culminated in the severest flood that has occurred here for some years. -Waipaoa river overflowed its banks near Tutoko, inundating the country between there and Roseland. Effects of the flood at Ormond have been severe. Messrs Bloomfield, Wyllie, aud Melville Smith succeeded in driving their stock to higher ground. - ' Mr H. G. Boylan proceeded with a boat, accompanied by a few volunteers, to render assistance to out-settlers in case of need. Oral bridge has been washed away. This bridge was erected about three years ago at a cost of £2500. Timely precaution taken by settlers in sending stock away has prevented a much larger amount of .damage than would have occurred. Rain is still descending.
