Decision and a Lecture.

Bench conferred two or three minutes, and the Chairman said : I have to announce that the license is unanimously granted. As to these letters that have appeared in the Mail, I believe I express the unanimous opinion of the Committee that they were grossly insulting ; so much so indeed that many of us wondered that they could be allowed to appear in the paper. Such letters were not insulting to one but the whole of the Committee. We are charged, in the first place, with being the publicans’ nominee ; and also that we were in the power of a bank manager ; and that we were unfit to sit here. I was anxious that the matter should be discussed ; but I certainly cannot call personal abuse discussion. In commenting on this application, it appeared to be a personal abuse of the Committee as a whole. It reflects very little credit on the writers or on the publisher of the paper. The license is granted. The house will have to be completed according to plan ; a fire escape will have to be put at the window, and a stable for three horses must be put up.

WAVERLEY DISTRICT. The Licensing Committee sat at Waverley on Tuesday. Present, Messrs W. Wilson (chairman), Brewer, Dickie, Bridge, and Hair. The police reported favorably of each hotel and applicant. A transfer of license for Waverley Hotel

from W. Jackson to W. Mitchinson was granted.

Renewals were granted to F. O’S M’Carthy, Railway Hotel, Patea Bridge ; J. Hunter, Whenuakura; Mrs Ballatm Commercial, Waverley ; F. Filers, Waitototara ; and S. W. Nicholls, Waitotara.
