Some new discovery for cheapening railways is reported from America as an important secret, which cannot be mentioned till patents are secured in all railway countries. The new Secretary for Ireland does not move anywhere without a bodyguard of police in plain clothes. A Hurricane and tidal wave swept over one of the Fiji islands called Vavou. Two thousand houses (native) were destroyed ; also McArthur and Coy’s warehouse and contents, and many European houses. One ship was carried inland on the tidal wave, and another was sunk.
A woman entered a chemist’s shop in Wellington and asked for some Chlorodyne. She swallowed a dose, and then asked for some in a bottle. While the chemist turned away she attempted to ‘help herself and swallow a quantity. She was prevented or the large dose would have been fatal.
The Mubberebb of the two Irish Secretaries are not yet found. One of the Canard steamers is to be boarded before reaching New York, as the police have information that the assassins are supposed to be on board. When the murdered secretaries were found, both bodies had several stabs, and the throats were cut. Lord Frederick Cavendish’s lips were moving as if trying to speak, but no other sign of consciouness was shown. The Viceroy saw the scuffle in the Park from a window of the Viceregal Lodge, but too distant to observe what was going on. A Promise is made to Otago members by the Minister of Public Works that a loan is to be proposed by Government, and the Otago Central Railway will be favorably considered in connection with the works to be executed out of loan. A deputation of 16 Otago members (a formidable number to pull together) obtained this promise last week. They will see that the pledge is kept too. But what about a through line to connect Auckland with Wellington ? Surely that should be included in the loan scheme. It is denied that the London Times is to be reduced from threepence to a penny. It is hard to understand how two sheets of eight pages like the Times could bo produced for a penny. There are limits to reductions. 1 If the leading journal were twopence, its circulaiion would be much larger. Some Otago members are making it a condition that unless Government include the Otago Central Railway in the new loan scheme, they will oppose Government in their general policy. Two Ministers, Mr Oliver and Mr Dick, are both pledged to this project.
An old sailor was observed to be always hanging about the door of a church when a marriage was taking place. He explained that he liked to see the tied going out.
