ULTIMATUM TO EGYPT.

(Reuter's Despatch to the Mail.) Cairo, 25th.—England and France have sent an ultimatum to the President of the Council of Ministers to terminate the present disorder. The ironclads' are off the coast. The ultimatum is final.

The balance-sheet of the Borough Council appears on the fourth page. The statement of borough reserves, as reported to Government, appears on the second page. A fire broke out last night in the Wanganui Herald office ; originating at front, in the reporter’s upper room, supposed to be caused by dropping a match. The prompt action of the fire brigade prevented much damage being done. The fire did not extend to the printing department. A Watch was stolen by John Donaghy at Hormanby, from the* clothes of John Mulholand while the latter was asleep in Brett’s hotel. Sergeant Donovan traced the watch to a cleaner in Patea, and by this clue Donaghy was found and appreHe was brought before the R.M. to-day, and committed for trial. A lunatic has been causing trouble to the settlers at Whenuakura. He is a stranger named M’Lean, and among his crazies he says Mother Shipton left him a legacy. He will be brought up at the Court to-morrow for an order to remove him. Property-tax summonses came before the E.M, Court to-day. Mr Dempsey, lately of Waverley, had judgment given against him for £1 14s 4d and costs. Mr Odgers, had judgment given against him for £7 5s 7d and £1 12s costs ; also J. Woolston, late of Waverley, £1 7s 6d and costs. Other defendants had been summoned, but paid into Court.

A deputation of Sydney boiler-makers has threatened to leave the Government of N. S. W. employ in a body if one of the trade, who fails to pay society subscriptions, is not dismissed. The Commissioner of Railways resented this proposed attempt at coercion, and said lie would protect the workman if the attempt were made, The British Government have declined to allow Cetewayo, ex-King of Zululand, who is now confined in Capetown, to re-visit his country. The petition of the Zulus for his release has therefore been refused. Underground Railways. — The latest thing in railways is the MidMetropolitan Pneumatic system. The route is the same as the Mid-London, and, with the exception of a short length near Shepherd’s bush, the entire railway will be formed by tunneling at such a depth as to avoid all existing obstacles, and will consist of two separate lines of tubular way about 12ft in diameter, lined with cast iron throughout. The carriages are to be lighted by electricity, and have a clear passage or gangway down the centre.
