TELEGRAMS TO THE “MAIL.”
(per united press association.) SHOCKING RAILWAY ACCIDENT. Dunedin.—A stock train going north with sheep early on Wednesday morning was thrown off the line by the engine striking a horse near Shag Point Junction, The engine was just entering a bridge when it went off, and it smashed the bridge considerably. Fifteen wagons filled with sheep ran off, and many of the sheep were' killed and a number injured. The engine turned over., The driver was thrown twenty yards ■ ahead of the engine, and escaped unhurt. The fireman landed amongst the debris, and it was two or three hours before he was got out, badly bruised and scalded. The line was blocked for some hours.
New Knights, Wellington.—The Governor has received a cablegram announcing that the Queen has conferred the honor of Knighthood upon the Hon John Hall and Colonel Whitmore. '
Large Fire. Masterton.—D. F. McCarthy’a store was burned down this morning. The brigade worked well, and saved the Club Hotel and Rapp & Hare’s store adjoining. Insurance'on McCarthy’s is understood to be about £SOO ; loss £7OO. SHOOTING AT BURGLARS; Christchurch. —Another attempt at burglary was made at Avondale last night. The burglars were fired at twice, but escaped unhurt. CANTERBURY PRODUCE. Christchurch.—The grain market during the week has been quiet, though a fair trade may be noted. Prices for most descriptions of produce are on the basis of last week. Wheat —A few lots have been sold at 4s 8d to 4s 9d, and Id more for best lots. There is a fair demand for seed parcels. Chick is in good request, and any lots brought forward find ready buyers. Oats—There is no alteration in values, while holders are firm in quoting. Potatoes-Prices stand at 35s to 365. The enquiry for export purposes contirlues active.
Maori Parliament Wanted. Wellington.—Rewi’s letter as ,laid be- - fore the House was addressed to Sir George Grey, asking him to .get Parliament removed to Auckland, or that some “ able men ” should be deputed to meet there, and the Maoris meet with them and discuss matters for the benefit of the two races.
