OPENING OF PARLIAMENT.
(TER UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.) HOUSE OP REPRESENTATIVES. Wellington, Thursday.—-The House met at 2 o’clock. The members attended the Commissioners in the other Chamber, and on returning, fifty-six, including Mr Pilliet member for Stanmore, took the oath and their seats. Mr Wason for Wakanui, and Major Harris for Franklyn were called, but did not appear. The Hon Major Atkinson moved, That Sir G. M. O’Rorke be elected Speaker. Mr Macandrew, rising on the Opposition side, expressed pleasure in seconding the nomination. No other candidate was named. • Jr Sir G. M. O’Rorke, on being conducted to the chair by Major Atkinson and Mr Macandrew, returned thanks for his election., He spoke in defence of parliamentary government, and asked members to aid him in-upholding its prerogative. Mr Hutchison hoped steps would be taken for amending their standing orders) so as to avoid a repetition of the difficulties of last session.
At 3;15 the House adjourned till 1.45 to-morrow.
LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
Only six Couricillors attended in the Upper Chamber while the Commissioners were formally opening Parliament. The andience was made up of members from the Lower House, who came to hear the commission read. The ceremony occupied only a few minutes.
