Opnnake.—A lamentable r gun accident yesterday occurred here, in seriously; wounding a - young; man named Thomas Fowler; He - and; another. named Walter Start were out shooting, when tlie gun accidentally exploded, entering the left side of the face, and fractunttg the tipper jaw. Qale Shipwrecks. TERRIBLE SCENES at TIMARU.
Timaru, : Snnilay Evening.—A fearful gale has been raging to-day. At one o’clock the ship, Benvenue broke adrift. Her crew left.in open, boats for the City of Perth. The latter rode, by a singlehawser until 3.45 p.m., when it parted. Both vessels were within a short distance of each other, and became wrecks. Before the City of - Perth parted her hawser, all the crew left in four boats. -The; mate - bad . both his-fogs broken by - the recoil of the cable. Great anxiety was felt for the safety of. the boats,; as i a heavy sea was running ; but all, ! gets ' inside the breakwater safely. ’ Soon afterwards Captain Mills, ; the; harbourmaster, with a full boat’s* .cMW, ;'went ••off,'; and “two 'other boats.)
