WHAT CAN BE DONE.
Tl ie Borough Council will meet for business next Monday, and the Engineer’s plans and estimates are expected to be then ready. The borough greatly needs some impulse given to works of improvement, in order to sustain the previous rate of progress, and carry the increased population over a dull period. Six thousand pounds may well be spent on municipal improvements during the next two years, by which time the railway ought to be through to the north as well as south, and so place this port in a fair position to do the business of a 1-n-ge harbor district. If local labor be kept fully employed through this winter, there will be land to sell and occupy next spring and summer, close to this port and also behind Waverley. The Oeo block and some land near Opunaki will soon be put in the market, making business brisker further north. And by opening the railway to Manutalii within twelve months, and completing the last section to Hawera within two years, this harbor district seems to have an encouraging prospect.
