Sir H. Parkes in London.
London, 19th.—Sir Henry Parkes was this evening entertained at a banquet by the Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone. A large number of distinguished guests were invited to meet the New South Wales Premier.
GREAT STRIKE OF COLLIERS. MILITARY CALLED OUT.
London, 19th.—An extensive strike of colliers has occurred at Wrexham, Denbigshiro, in Wales. The locked-ont miners to-day besieged the offices of the officials of various mines, and the latter only effected their escape from the attacks of the mob with difficulty. The military stationed in the neighbourhood had to be called out before the disturbance could be suppressed. The Insurance Conspiracy. Adelaide.—The trial of Messrs Barker, Forsyth, and Dr; Horton, for alleged conspiracy to defraud the Australian Mutual Provident Society was continued to-day. During the cross-examination, Hicks, who has turned Queen’s evidence, made statements strongly inculpating prisoners. . ; The Attack on the Queen. PRISONER FOUND INSANE. London, 19th.—The case of Roderick Maclean, the would-be assassin of the Queen, was to-day again brought before the Special Commission sitting at Readings After a full inquiry the prisoner was found not guilty of the the charge ,of (reason, on the ground that he was not in a sane condition when he committed the act. Maclean will consequently be detained during Her,Majesty’s pleasure. MR PARNELL’S PAROLE. London, 19fch.—It is announced that Mi’ Parnell will return from France on Monday next; the 24th instant, when he will surrender his parole. , Election Expenses—Change of System. London, 19th.-—A bill providing that what may be’ defined as the necessary expenses of elections to Parliament should be charged to. the rates of the borough, county, or district, in which the election takes place, was read a second time in the House of Commons to-day. The measure has been introduced by a private member, but receives the support of Government. Gas Explosion in Chapel. - : Sydney, 20th.—An explosion of gas occurred in a chapel at Paramatta last night. The building was seriously damage, ,but no one was injured. Queensland Coal. Brisbane, 20th.—A seam of coal has been discovered at Palmerville, on‘the Palmer River, in the north of this colony. ;•
Death of Sir H. Cole. London, 19 th.—The death, at the age of 74, is announced to-day of Sir Henry Cole, the well-known author and administrator, and formerly director of the South Kensington Museum;- VJ London Markets. London, 19th.—There are ho chau'ges' to report in colonial tallow or breadstuffs . Outrages on Jews. St. Petersburg, 19th. — Official statements have been published here regarding the state of affairs in Southern Russia, in which the fact that of late outrages against Jews having been of a violent and wide-spread character is fully admitted by the Government. In addition to the official accounts, reports are to band from unofficial sources in which the assailants of Jews are charged with having been guilty of acts of a most barbarous and atrocious character.
