PATEA VOLUNTEERS—PROMOTIONS.
The ordinary weekly parade and annual meeting of the Patea Rifle Volunteers took place last evening. There wore about 50 present, including the band. The report and balancesheet of the company was received and adopted. "'-The’; tmlance-shect shows Ja credit balance of nearly £6O. The election of a lieutenant to fill the vacancy ; caused : bj( the|resighation ’of Chapman then took place; and SubLieutenant King was unanimously elected to fill the vacancy. There were two candidates proposed for the position of sub-lieutenant— Color-Sergeant_ J. Kitching and Mr H. F. Christie. The
result of the voting was : —Color-Sergt. Kitching, 23; Mr Christie, 21. The former was therefore declared elected. After ths election of officers, Color-Sergeant Kells, on behalf of the ‘Whibh- liad ’attended!’,’the* Wfthgnnni presented Lieut 1 King with an address and a handsome gold ring, in recognition of the energetic manner in which he endeavored to work the contingent to a state of efficiency. ; The company sang, “ He’s a jolly good" fellow.”
Lieutenant King returned thunks for the unexpected presentation, and said a great part of the success achieved du| tq_ (he manner in which the non-commissioned officers and men worked together.
