A Native Killed.

A strange tragedy happened last evening near Manutahi. Some natives had been drinking, and they started on horseback towards Hawera. Two natives were met on the further side of the Manawapou river riding furiously, their horses in a foamy lather. Such breakneck riding is rather common with Maoris, and this excited no surprise. A man from Hawera, named Martin M’Mahon, was riding southward this morning, and found a Maori lying dead neat Manawapou bridge. He was a Mokoia native named Haka. The cause of death will be enquired into by the coroner.
