CONSTABULARY ORDERED UP.
A POLITICAL LESSON.
New Plymouth this day.—Natives began to assemble at Parihaka yesterday, with the object of holding the halfyearly meeting in defiance,of the terms of the West Coast Settlement Act. They also attempted to erect some of the buildings which had _ been pulled down: The' Constabulary were mustered at once from the other stations.
There are at present about eight hundred natives assembled at Paribaka, more than half of them having assembled there from' all quarters during the last week or so.
On the Constabulary arriving at Parihaka from other stations, the natives refrained from making any speeches, but persisted in building the whares, but these were afterwards pulled down by the Constabulary. The natives were ordered .-to ; bat they did not comply. " Some of the natives were heard several days..ago to. say that.as Bryce was gone and Grey was in place, they would hold their meeting at Parihaka. From the .Constabulary camp" several natives were heard addressing the assembly, which was estimated -at 800. natives.-. However, before any steps could be taken by Major Goring the natives dispersed. Food -. was not given out in the marae, bnt taken in whares. Mr Messenger, the Government interpreter, went into Parihaka, with a view 1 of ascertaihihg if possible what had.been done at the meeting, but was not-successful. /At 9.30 yesterday morning the natives again assembled in the marae. Sixty A.C.’s from Newell-road, and 25 from Pangarehh, were sent'for in order to be in readiness, if required. Mr Bryce telegraphed from here. ,to,Col.‘Roberts to have some whares’' in. the .neighborhood of 1 the marap pulled'dowh, :and in sticli a way that they would fall lb to marae; and also'-that all males who were strangers to Parihaka should be arrested, if in' any numbers, ;; f Twelve whares were destroyed j.ahd as soon as the alien tribes saw this they left Parihaka.; so -Col. Roberts decided not to arrest any. The. Maoris were told that the destruction of whares was 'decided ;on through their holding the meeting. Mr Messenger wisited Parihaka again •hiring'the nfternoohj 'and was satisfied that a meeting had- taken place ; and he. was informed that it was in consequence of Mr Bryce’being out of office that the meeting had been held.’ . !
Telegrams this morning say everything is quiet. No sign of another meeting, but the natives are sullen. They have taken away the goods removed from the whafes which .had been destroyed.
