Tuesday Evening, April 18, 1882. The ordinary parade of the Patea Rifles takes place this evening. A lieutenant is also to be elected in place of Lieut., Chapman, resigned. The outward ’Frisco mail closes in this district on Thursday... New premises for the Bank of New Zealand are to be erected at Normanby, and tenders for'the building are invited. It. is reported that Mr .Wason, who was unseated for Wakanni on the petition of Mr Ivess, has to pay about £7OO as expenses. : The Wakatii steamer lanived off thei bar too late for the tide this morning. She has probably run to ' Wanganui, and will return for Patea by to-morrow’s early tide. She is to'sail for Wellington on Thursday at 10 a.m.The eldest daughter of Mr F. E. Jackson was married on Monday to Mr R. H. Mason, of the Hutt. A clear and beautiful display of the mirora Australia, corresponding to the northern lights seen in the other hemisphere, was witnessed last evening, soon after seven o’clock, and continuing till Luminous shafts of -cnOTgrng-Ttgnx —sH or —trrt de s ceil t~ "fays’' athwart the south-western sky, the hues being varying shades of pink. So grand a display is rarely seen from this colony. s A first meeting of Mr Halse’s creditors is being held at . New ‘ Plymouth to-day. Mr Hawken invites tenders for erecting a dwelling house near Kakaramea.
Mr Barton, solicitor, has entered into partnership with Mr Farrington, who will conduct the Hawera business of the firm, Mr Barton remaining at Patea'. ' The Major of Hawera, Mr McGuire,' has accepted the captaincy of the local Volunteers.'' The Patea steamer lies in the same positiori,’ her stern against the separate rock, and the forward-part against the cliff-end. Her condition is about the same as except that -the, companion-way to the cabin is breaking out of position. ' A good deal ofsand has washed in through ''the broken plates, the rock being partly through the bottom . The wreck will be sold as she lies at noon to-morrow’. I The’ steamer was insured for £3OOO last year, and her insurance was reduced this year to £2,500, as follows : £ 1000 in the Union office, £IOOO in, the Sooth' British, and £SOO in the Colonial. This would be a little- over half her value.
