A MAORI PROTEST.
A counter movement has been got up by mischief-makers in a part of the Rotorua district. The Act constituting the Hot Lakes as a separate district for settlement on a system of 99 years’ leases, took in a largo area of country. Some -chiefs have sighed the following protest“ Ohinernntn, April 3rd, 1882 —Hon. John Bryce, Native Minister, Wellington.—We, the chiefs and owners of the laud called Wailiti Ngongotaha Kawai, in the Rotorua district, learn with surprise that the Thermal Springs Bill is placed over our land, although there are no thermal springs on onrland. Wo met at Ohinernntn to meet you this day, and learn yon-are not coming here. Now, this is our word to you. Remove the Thermal Bill from off our land, placed there without our consent. We will never consent that the Government shall interfere with our land. Be quick and comply with our wish, in removing the restriction from our land. Please give us an early reply. —Turn TeatuaTURANGI, Tb Ao KaHIUA, META HIATU, Ngatitengauau,. Ngatitura.”
