The following fearful thunderbolt was hurled at the Governor by the N.Z. Times :—“ The abnormal condition, of his mental system which has led to his vice-regal action being so strangely out of harmony with that which Royalty itself, in circumstances similar to those in which we now unfortunately find ourselves, would have, and in reality has observed, must remain, we suppose, one of those mysteries which in all cases more or less envelop the workings, of the erring spirit of man.” The Times is edited by a serious clergyman, and the Wanganui Herald wickedly suggests that if the word “Babylon” could have been introduced, the mysterious vision would have been complete. Chicago has a larger proportion of Hebrews in its population than any other city in the world. The first successful attempt at preserving meat by packing in air tight jars was made by M. Apparatin France in 1811. For his discovery the Emperor rewarded him with a gift of 12,000 francs.
