EXPORTING SCABBY SHEEP.
The Wanganui Chronicle says :—A flock of sheep brought into town for shipment to Wellington yesterday was, previous to being put on board the Huia, inspected by Mr Richardson, sheep inspector, and a clean certificate refused, as scab was found among them. We believe proceedings are to be taken under the Sheep Act against the owner for driving scabby sheep through tbo public streets. Cases are also pending against other owners for breaches of the provisions of the Act. Reports reach us of a variety of shifts and expedients resorted to by some sheepowners with a view to evade the sheep regulations, in some instances sheep supposed to be infected being tied up in the ti-tree scrub while the inspector was examining the clean portion of the flock ; in others the inspector being induced to grant a certificate for a portion of a flock on the ground that the remainder could not be mustered at the time, there being reason to believe that afterwards attempts were made to palm off scabby and uncertificatcd sheep as those for which a certificate had been granted.
