Compliment to Patea Volunteers.
The following letter has been received from the Officer Commanding the Wanganui Militia and Volunteer Dis-
Wanganui, April 13, 1882
Lieut. King. —Dear Sir, —I have the honor to acknowledge receipt of your kind note of yesterday’s date, thanking the officers and Volunteers of Wanganui for the reception accorded to your detachment, and in reply I must say that yon have paid myself and the Wanganui Volunteers too great a compliment. I trust yon will overlook any shortcomings on my part if I did not pay yon and your detachment the attention they deserved at our hands. 1 desire to thank yon for having left yonr district in such large numbers (at great inconvenience to yourselves), to assist in making the Easter Encampment at Wanganui such a success as it turned out to be. In fact if it had not been for the cavalry and your corps turning out in such force, the Camp would have been a complete failure as far as Wanganui is concerned. It is only on occasions of this kind that the true spirit of Volunteering becomes apparent. lam sure Patea must be proud of her citizen soldiers for the very able manner in which they fulfilled their part of the work allotted to them. And it shows that you must have worked very hard to bring the men up to the state'of efficiency they showed while in camp and on parade.—l have the honor to be, &c., S. Neill, Captain commanding district.
