BURNT TO A CINDER.

An aged, sickly, and decrepit Maori woman, was burned to a cinder on Sunday night, at Awahuri. It appears the unfortunate creature, who had been ailing for some time, was left alone in her whare, and it is supposed that in lighting her pipe a spark ignited the bed covering, resulting in the destruction of the hut, and the burning of the poor old creature to a cinder. We have not heard that a coroner’s inquest was held, and the fact that the occurrence could have taken place within eight miles of Palmerston, and be not known to six persons in this town, is a sad commentary upon our boasted humanity and civilisation. It is true the victim was only a worn-out Maori woman, but the sad ending of her weary life was even more wretched than the generality of her race, who when dissolution is known to be nigh, are deserted by the tribe, and left to “ shuffle off the mortal coil” in awful solitude.
