Local Clubs.

A new building for the Patea Club, which is quitting the room over Mr E. C. Horner’s office, is about to be erected by one of its members, Mr Josiah Richards, on a section between Gibson’s store and Dr Croft’s. ‘ It will be a one-storey building, designed ns a comfortable resort for gossip, whist parties, billiards, and a quiet little bar. The members seem to keep Well together. It would have been a strong coalition if the; Fanners’ Club could have joined the older Patea, Club, and made one large body. It happens, however, that the objects and habits of the two bodies are different; and they can now pursue their separate courses without clashing. The contract for the new club-house is let tor Messrs .Mace ,and .Bassett. ■ The Farmers’ Club have a largo room cosily furnished over Mr Eyton’s new office; Not much activity is noticeable at present; but the season just past has been a busy one for farmers, who don’t sit down to discuss new methods of farming, nor even. old grievances, when there is practical work to do in wool clipping ' arid harvesting. This club has been certainly useful to the district during its short career. It has brought about a remedy for grievous mismanagement of the sheep question ; for its action has put a stop to the loose inspection ' Which permitted sheep to come into this district from infected' farms about Wanganui and Rangitikei, The combined action of a body like the Patea District Farmers’ Club is more likely to command the earnest attention of Government than action or protests by individual farmers. Combination is force; and this ..club is beginning, to feel its own strength.
