Major Atkinson's Surplus.
We learn by telegrams from Wellington that the Customs revenue up to March 31st, the close of financial year, shows £126,575 over, the Treasurer’s estimated total, which was £1,345,000. Returns for other branches of revenue are ; not complete, but they approximate to the following totals : —Postal, £155,200, £3,200 in excess of estimate; telegraph, £73,000, £3,000 under estimate; stamp department, £174,000; £24,000 above the estimate. The colonial beer duty was estimated to yield ' for the year £60,000, and the receipts have been £58,467 5s 7d, or £1,528 14s 5d below the estimate. The largest receipts for any month were £6,598 16s lid for December, and the smallest were in July, £3,-673 14s sd. It is how certain that the Treasurer will have a substantial surplus on the whole budget, there being savings in some departments to inerrase the credit balance of revenue. Reductions in some branches of taxation may be looked for.
