Cricket at Patea.

The niatch Patea Glob representatives for the Taranaki matches at Easter v. the World, was played on Saturday (one innings each), and resulted in ah easy victory for the chosen team, although they played with only 9 men, Fraser and Jacomb (their best bowlers) being unavoidably absent. The bowling of the World was so good that it could not be trifled with. Coutts 21, Jacomb 11, Taplin 10,. were the only players who succeeded in making double figures. G. Harden played a nice innings for 9 and not out. The bowling of the Club was loose at first; Coutts, on whom they -depended, being hit all over the

field by Horner and Arundell, Dasent bowled steadier and better than he has ever done in a match ; and if he would only refrain from trying to bowl too swift at commencement, he might become the Club’s crack bowler.

The World played with only 10' men. Horner 19, Arundell 13, and Carey 9, were the only three whose scores are worth mentioning. The first-named two had been chosen to go to play against New Plymouth, but pressure of business prevented their accepting. Doneghue and Carey are very promising. The former especially has as finished a style ns any all-round cricketer; and Jacomb, as the veteran wicketkeeper, may some day find a successor in Doneghue. Next season these two youths should be exalted from the tjuited Club to the P.G. C., when they would get more opportunities of developing their love of the manly game. After the match was finished, the secretary called the Club together on the pitch, inviting specially Messrs Read and Coutts, who were then presented each with a bat on behalf of the Committee of the Patea Club, for the magnificent score made in the last match, played against Hawera. The two gentlemen responded in fitting language ; and so broke up a very enjoyable afternoon’s cricket.
