Death of Dr Samuels.
New Plymouth.—Dr Samuels, who died yesterday, was a student in Poland, and joined in the procession that greeted Napoleon on his way to Moscow, in the famous campaign of 1812. SEAT FOR MR BALLANCE. Christchurch.—The Times this morning says : “ We learn privately that Mr Ballance, of Wanganui, will probably be a candidate for Stanmore ; and that in the event of his standing, Mr Andrews will resign in his favor. OW AMONG SEAMEN. Auckland.—A row concerning nationality occurred on Saturday night between seamen of the barque Thames and Alcestis,’ lying at Queen-street Wharf. When police arrived, two of the Alcestis crew had axes in hand, but threw them away on seeing the police. A general fight ensued, during which four shots were fired, but no harm done. The men retired to their respective ships, and threw stones and other missies. The row was quelled on the arrival of reinforcements of police. Ministers Returning. Auckland.—Major Atkinson and Mr Bryce left for Wellington this morning.
